The Assembly Theatre

Our Story

The Assembly Theatre was born out of resilience and collaboration. In 2016, the space formerly known as Unit 102 Theatre was forced to leave its home at 376 Dufferin Street after five years of operation. A year later, in September 2017, Unit 102 partnered with Leroy Street Theatre to open a new chapter at 1479 Queen Street West, what is now The Assembly Theatre.

Today, The Assembly Theatre is under a new volunteer run leadership team and continues to evolve as a hub for independent and emerging artists. Our mandate remains clear: to provide affordable space and foster bold, innovative storytelling.

We are proud to be home to three resident theatre companies: One Four One Collective, Knifefight Theatre, and Leroy Street Theatre. Together, we strive to create a vibrant, collaborative community that champions creativity and diversity in Toronto’s theatre scene.

Our Mission

To support indie theatre artists and featured resident theatre companies through community building initiatives, special events, and access to affordable space.

Our Vision

A thriving, inclusive indie theatre ecosystem in Parkdale wherein local artists are empowered to create, collaborate, and connect, fostering bold storytelling, community engagement, and a lasting foundation for Toronto’s next generation of artists.

Our Values

Accessibility
We believe that space and resources should be within reach for all indie theatre artists, regardless of background or budget.

Community
We create space and opportunity for meaningful connections between artists, audiences, and community organizations to build a supportive and inclusive theatre culture in Parkdale.

Creativity
We champion artistic risk-taking, resourcefulness and the entrepreneurial spirit of independent artists by giving emerging and established creators alike the freedom to take bold chances and bring new stories to life.

Equity & Inclusion
We are committed to building a theatre that reflects the city we call home. We strive to dismantle barriers in the arts by offering space, visibility and opportunities to artists of all backgrounds, identities and abilities. Our goal is to foster an environment where everyone feels welcome to create, take risks and belong.

Sustainability
We strive to create long-term, affordable solutions that support the growth and resilience of indie theatre in Toronto.

Collaboration
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We thrive on a shared vision and collective effort from the artists who create the shows, to the communities who fill our seats. We believe great art emerges when ideas collide, when people listen, and when creative voices work together towards something bigger than themselves.
